Domestic Violence is a pattern of aggressive and coercive behaviors that one partner in a relationship uses to gain power or control over the other. This type of abuse can be physical, sexual, emotional, economic or psychological. The behaviors exhibited in domestic violence cases are intended to intimidate, manipulate, threaten, isolate, frighten, coerce or injure someone. They typically occur in the home, between the two people involved in an intimate relationship.
Florida Domestic Violence Statistics
In 2013, 108,030 domestic violence offenses were reported in Florida and 65,645 domestic violence arrests were made, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Of the reported cases, 6,567 offenses occurred in Pinellas County, along with 6,758 in Hillsborough County, 9,953 in Miami-Dade County and 4,953 in Polk County.
The offenses make up a variety of crimes, some more serious than others, but all offenses are criminal. The categories include murder, manslaughter, forcible rape, forcible fondling, aggravated assault, aggravated stalking, simple assault and threat/intimidation stalking. The offense most commonly reported in Pinellas County was simple assault, at 5,414 offenses in 2013. This is followed by 957 reported cases of aggravated battery and 52 reported cases of forcible rape
