How Cell Phone Payment Apps Prevent Fraud

Mobile apps are becoming increasingly popular as more people use their phones and tablets to perform a variety of functions. There are apps available that allow you to do your banking, order online and pay bills. Because mobile payment apps require you to enter sensitive information, such as credit or debit card numbers, account numbers or financial data, developers work hard to protect you from hackers and thieves. Additionally, many payment apps are developed with built-in fraud protections that will notify the financial institution if data is compromised. Since mobile devices are more vulnerable to theft or unauthorized access than other types of electronics, here are some added security features of mobile payment applications.

Username and Password Requirements

Typically, you will be required to set up a username and password to access the app. Often these apps have password length and content requirements. One of the best ways to protect yourself when using a mobile payment app is to use a different password for each app. This way, if your mobile device is lost or stolen, the thief cannot access all your data. Some payment apps erase old information and force users to provide new login credentials every few months. If not, you should still change your passwords regularly as an added security measure.

Data Encryption

Mobile payment apps encrypt your data so that hackers and thieves are unable to access any information. Encryption converts information into something called ciphertext that cannot be understood by the average person. In order to understand the data, a key or password is required to convert the information back into plain text. Encryption does not prevent someone from intercepting your information, but it can prevent them from reading the content. Most banking apps use a form of encryption to keep your information safe.

Automatic Logout

Mobile payment apps that require you to login with a username and password often provide an automatic logout feature. If you login to the app and close it without logging out, the data entered may be vulnerable to hackers or thieves. Many apps now automatically log you out of the app after it goes idle. Some may send you a message that you are about to be logged out while others simply do it for you with no warning.
