What Is an Ignition Interlock Device

Being convicted of a DUI charge comes with many repercussions. Besides facing potential jail time, steep fines, and a tarnished reputation, your driving privileges can be impeded or revoked. Often, individuals who are convicted of a DUI charge may have to use an Ignition Interlock Device, or IID for short. Put simply, this device is connected to the inside of a vehicle and requires the driver to breath into the device before they can start the vehicle. Acting like a Breathalyzer, if the driver’s BAC is above the programmed limit, the engine will not start.

How Does an Ignition Interlock Device Work?

Ignition interlock devices work rather simply. The driver breathes into the device to start the car and then waits five minutes for the device to beep. At this point, the driver must breathe into the device again. The device is able to determine the driver’s blood alcohol content and if it is above the pre-determined limit, the car will not start. If the driver’s BAC is below the limit, the car will start, but he or she will have to breathe into the device about every 30 minutes. Every time the driver breathes into the device, the data is recorded and transmitted to the Florida DMV.

Who Is Required to Have an Ignition Interlock in Florida?

Under Florida Statute, certain individuals have been convicted of a DUI charge will be required to use an ignition interlock device. Ultimately, the repercussions of a DUI charge will vary on a case-by-case basis, but these are the typical ignition interlock requirements:

Four or More Convictions	Minimum 5 years
