What Should I Do If I’m in A Car Accident?

Even though we don’t wish this on anyone, at some point in time, most people experience what it’s like to be in a car accident. The accident may simply be a bump in the parking lot, or it could end up in a more serious collision where people are injured. In any case, knowing how to react to a car accident will improve the outcome for everyone involved.

What Should I Do If Someone is Injured?

The law requires you to give reasonable assistance to anyone who is injured. For example, you may need to call an ambulance, take the injured person to the hospital or perform first aid, if you are able and know how.

Safety should be your first concern, so once you have assisted anyone who is injured, move the cars to the side of the road, especially if they are in the way of oncoming traffic. Leaving cars in the road could potentially cause another accident. If you are unable to move a car from the road, make sure it’s noticeable by turning on the hazard lights or place cones or flares around the scene if you access to them.

If I Think the Accident Was My Fault, Should I Say So?

The first thing you should do if you’re involved in a car accident is seek professional legal advice, so make sure you talk to your lawyer. Any information you give to the other driver or the police can be used against you at a later time. It’s best not to volunteer any information regarding who is to blame for the accident. Although you may think you were at fault, the other driver could be at fault as well.

What Information Should I Gather at the Accident Scene?

If you’re involved in an accident, make sure to get as much accurate information as possible at the scene of the incident. It may be difficult to obtain certain information because many records are now confidential under Florida law. Make sure you and the other driver involved exchange driver’s licenses and registration.
