Most Dangerous Tampa Intersections

Most Dangerous Tampa Intersections

The Tampa Bay Times released a report in December 2014, compiled from Pinellas and Hillsborough County statistics, related to accidents that occurred at intersections. In the report, five intersections stood out as some of the most dangerous in Tampa. The report also found that 58 percent of the reported traffic deaths involved pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists.

Hillsborough and Lois Avenue

Hillsborough Avenue, which is State Route 580, is a six-lane highway. The intersection of Lois Avenue, although marked with turn lanes and clearly designated crosswalks, is one of the most dangerous intersections in Tampa. There are many businesses at the intersection, including Hardee’s, Walgreens and Zaxby’s, all of which require motorists to turn and cross traffic, which increases accident risk.

Dale Mabry Highway and Waters Avenue

Dale Mabry Highway is one of the most heavily travelled roads in Tampa, making intersections along that road some of the most dangerous. Dale Mabry Highway is a six-lane road with substantial traffic. At the intersection of Dale Mabry Highway and Waters Avenue, there is a motel, increasing the amount of tourist traffic in the area. Drivers unfamiliar with local traffic patterns have an increased risk of getting in an accident.

Bruce B. Downs Boulevard and Fletcher Avenue

The intersection of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard and Fletcher Avenue is located next to the University of Southern Florida campus. A high concentration of students and their families might not know the local traffic patterns, further increasing the chance of accidents in this area. Additionally, there is a Wal-Mart Supercenter, a medical park and several banks near the intersection. This increases the potential for accidents as drivers may need to cross traffic in order to get to their destination.

Hillsborough Avenue and Orient Road

Located in an area with businesses that are more industrial than retail, the intersection of Hillsborough Avenue and Orient Road has higher than normal truck traffic. Additionally, the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino is located near the intersection, increasing traffic that could lead to collisions.

Dale Mabry Highway and Northdale Boulevard

The intersection of dale Mabry Highway and Northdale Boulevard are not far from the Lakes of Northdale Apartments, the Bob Sierra Family YMCA and a Whole Foods Market adjacent to the intersection. Because of the area’s appeal to those focused on fitness, there may be a higher than normal concentration of cyclists or joggers, leading to accidents involving pedestrians or cyclists.
